Description

In Ekev, this week's Torah portion, Moses tells the people of Israel that the forty years of wandering in the wilderness wasn't just a punishment. It was also a device God used to refine the people of Israel. God humbled them by teaching them to rely solely on God. When they were hungry, they could only rely on manna. When they were thirsty, they could only rely on the water God gave them. The exile in the desert can relate to our current exile. Just as God used the forty years in the desert to give Israel an opportunity to repent for their mistakes, God is using this time to encourage us to turn to him and to test our hearts. Blessed are you, journeying through Eikev,

When “because” becomes your spiritual trek,

On this path, the ancient and the new,

Invoking the blessings of covenantal brew.

For each step taken in Torah's light,

Elevates you to spiritual heights,

And in the practice of each mitzvah grand,

You touch the Divine with your mortal hand.

Recall the Golden Calf, the rebellious rise,

Yet, acknowledge too, God’s forgiving skies.

Embrace repentance, let your heart be clean,

Find strength in the Second Tablets’ sheen.

Nourished by manna in desert's embrace,

Remember, by God's word, we trace our grace.

It is not bread alone that sustains our soul,

But Divine utterance, making us whole.

Approach the land flowing with milk and honey,

Rejoice in the "seven kinds," days sunny.

For it is not by might or power you thrive,

But by God’s providence, you truly survive.

Destroy idols, for pride can mislead,

it's God who fulfills each need.

In the rhythm of prayer, find your respite,

And anticipate resurrection in messianic light.

So walk in the light of Eikev, be brave,

For in understanding “because,” you are saved.

The path may be thorny, but destination is bright,

Blessed journey in Eikev, embraced in God’s sight.

We say the traditional Jewish prayers, read the Torah portion of the week (or the holy day) as all Jews do around the world, and listen to a few drashes (insights based on Torah).
