Dr. C. R. Chandrashekhar, often called the “People’s Psychiatrist,” dedicated his life to making mental health care accessible, affordable, and stigma-free. As a senior professor at NIMHANS and the architect behind India’s District Mental Health Programme, he brought psychiatry out of hospital walls and into communities.
From treating over a lakh patients free of cost to training thousands across sectors, his work laid the foundation for mental health services at the grassroots level in India. In this episode, we delve into the legacy of a man who believed mental health is everyone’s right—and proved it through action.
