This week we jump to the Big 10 with Penn State DB/Def Recruiting coordinator, Terry Smith.

This Gateway Gator first made a name for himself in the 85 WPIAL Championship win over #1 in the USA North Hills where he scored the games only touchdown.

He took his talents to Happy Valley, where he had a hell of playing career, at one time Joe Paterno said of Smith “I don’t think there’s a better receiver in the country at what he does”.

He turned his success into an 11th round draft selection from the Washington Commanders. He also played in CFL and AFL, before ultimately making the decision to end his playing career and move to the next phase in his journey Coaching.

Returning to the WPIAL Coach smith got his start in 1996 at Hempfeild. After a year in the high school game he would make his first trip to the college level spending 3 years at Duquesne. Then it was time to return home.

Coach Smith retuned to Gateway in 2001 as the Offensive Coordinator/ heir apparent to the Head coaching job. The next 10 years was a fine tuned oiled machine. At the core of that machine was Coach Smith care for his players on and off the field. He also went 101 and 30 while sending 23 players to FBS schools and 17 others to FCS schools.

After a stop in Philadelphia, it was once again time to return home. In 2014 Coach Franklin added Coach Smith to his Coaching staff. 9 season later and he still doing what he loves at a place he loves.

We wrap everything up with a little WPIAL football and some of coaches favorite memories over the years!

“We are all just a series of experiences, stories, and memories. And each one has shaped us into the people we are today… there’s a story there, and we want to hear it.”
