This week on DingoTalk, we sit down with Ryan Munz, currently in his third season as head coach at UW-Platteville and his 22nd year with the team. Munz has been a vital part of the program, having served as the offensive coordinator since 2007.
In his debut season as head coach, Munz led the Pioneers to a 5-5 overall record and a 4-3 mark in the WIAC, securing notable victories against ranked teams including Bethel, UW-River Falls, and UW-Whitewater. The win against UW-Whitewater was particularly significant, marking the first victory over them since 2004 when Munz himself was the quarterback.
Under Munz's leadership, the 2016 season saw the Pioneers boasting the best scoring offense in the WIAC, averaging over 40 points per game. The team featured outstanding performances, with Tom Kelly setting a single-season touchdown passing record, Dan Arnold breaking the single-season receiving yards per game record, and Wyatt Thompson setting a single-game rushing record. That year also saw the Pioneers returning to the NCAA playoffs, with Dan Arnold gaining NFL recognition.
The Pioneer offense continued to shine in 2015, averaging 38 points and 476 yards per game, leading the conference in passing and red zone efficiency. Munz's offensive strategy had a lasting impact, continuing into 2014 with impressive performances from running back Andy Puccini and quarterback Bryce Corrigan.
Munz's tenure as offensive coordinator saw record-breaking seasons, with the 2013 team setting numerous program records in total offense, passing yards, and points scored. The Pioneers consistently ranked among the top offenses in the country under his guidance.
Beyond the field, Munz contributes to the UW-Platteville community as a faculty member in the Health and Performance Department and serves as the Community Service Liaison for the Athletic Department. A former standout quarterback for the Pioneers, Munz holds degrees in business finance and project management and has international playing experience in Germany.
