Welcome to THIS ROAD, a short encouragement for the road your life is currently leading you down.
At the beginning of 2020, I read John Mark Comer’s book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.” The book was recommended to me by my friend Kyle, who said it was nothing short of life-altering. He was right.
Months before the threat of a pandemic settled into our world, I was embarking on a life of less hurry. I was attempting to figure out how to manage my time, eliminate needless things, and become a better follower of Jesus. Maybe the Lord is trying to teach all of us this lesson?
One of the ways Comer recommends eliminating hurry is by living a simpler life. That has become a bit of a buzz word in the last few years, but there is real meaning to living in simplicity. In fact, if we really read the words of Jesus, he seemed intent on us being followers of simple means. He asked us to share everything, right? I know, in America, this can be a touchy subject. We like our stuff, don’t we?
There is power in simplicity, though. Seriously, remember that feeling of accomplishment you get from clearing out old clothes and dropping them off at a donation center? Our bodies can literally feel a difference when something becomes less cluttered.
What if we were content with what we have, and more importantly, content in having a relationship with Jesus? In his sermon on the mount, Jesus asks us not to worry about what we will eat or wear because God will provide for us. Being content in our material possessions is a pathway to a deeper relationship with Christ. What if we ascribed to a few of these maxims:
Spend Less – Give More
Do Less – Pray More
Watch Less – Walk More
I think we might be surprised by how simple our life can become. We might also be surprised how deep our walk with Jesus will become.
