God often uses "marriage" as a metaphor for faith because it communicates really well. In a marriage, we expect loyalty, love, affection, and commitment. We expect faithfulness. When one party fails, then there are problems. There is hurt, anger, betrayal. In our passage, Jeremiah explains what the southern kingdom of Judah has done wrong. God's word also forces us to consider our churches and our individual lives--do we make the same mistakes? Through it all, we see how Jesus will fix everything.
