This is the last of the three parables Jesus tells in response to the Pharisees' muttering and grumbling at Luke 15:1-2. They were upset because Jesus showed love and compassion to faithless people--to folks who didn't have time for God, but instead focused on other things. This is the longest of Jesus' three story-like responses, and the most powerful. This parable offers three perspectives for us in 2023 America; (1) the viewpoint of the people in American society who are the most removed from God by their lifestyle and values, and (2) God's reaction when they (whoever they are!) decide to "come home" to Him, and then (3) the reaction of the believers, in community of faith--how will they respond to these sinners who have joined the family?
