The Apostle John wrote that one day we'd actually see Jesus as He really is (1 John 3:2). We celebrate Transfiguration Sunday because that's when He showed us a preview of that day. Even more than the scene at His baptism, the Transfiguration is when God pulls back the veil so we can really see Jesus. God wants us to see Him today, so Jesus becomes less abstract, less like someone from a book, and more like an older brother with whom we ought to have a warm relationship (cf. Hebrews 2:11).
