In honor of Pride Weekend we reviewed one of the most iconic Golden Girls Episodes, Season 2, Episode 5: “Isn’t it Romantic”.
We’re joined by Matt, an Ok Petunia from one of our country’s the Gay Mecca’s as we breakdown the episode where Dorothy’s Lesbian friend Jean comes to visit & ends up having “the hots for Rose”.
This is marked one of the first television portrayals of an openly Lesbian character on TV & possibly the first in a sitcom. At the time Gay Marriage was still illegal & would remain so for another 29 years.
While the actress Lois Nettles was not a Lesbian, this was a rare moment (even today) where an LGBTQIA person was portrayed as “just another regular person” & not just a stereotype, because we are just regular people!
