Welcome to Social Deconstruction! In this episode I introduce myself and the podcast and dive right into the first topic for thought: what even is an introduction? In this episode, I’ll be both introducing the podcast and talking about what introductions actually are. See what I did there? I’m introducing the podcast and talking about… yeah, you get it.
So my thinking behind this first episode is that I could give you a glimpse of what it looks like to explore the meaning behind something that we don’t usually think about. In this case, that thing is the ritual that we know as introductions. I would argue that they all typically consist of a greeting, an exchange of personal information, like names and titles, and a physical gesture. Not only that, but they are often culturally specific.
With all this meaning and ritual behind them, it’s only natural that sometimes they go wrong. Listen for the story of one of the most awkward introductions I’ve ever had and whether I ever came back from it, and for a discussion on the proper etiquette around introductions. Specifically those used in Western societies. That's right! I discuss proper introduction protocol according to the internet. So much fun!
