In Canada, Meta confirmed plans to end millions of Canadians’ access to news on its platforms, after the Federal Government's Online News Act – Bill C-18 – became law on Thursday.


While designed to support the struggling Canadian news industry by requiring Facebook and Google to negotiate compensating deals with local news outlets for posting or linking to their work, initial reactions seem to have put a price on free speech.


In 2021, a similar law led to Australian users getting blocked from sharing or viewing news on Facebook. While in the United States, the public is asking government officials to debate the profound effect corporate advertising exerts on health directives and political elections.
