Let’s start off by exploring the simplest way to explain how they differ.

Deflection is commonly grouped with the term projection. Projection, like deflection, is where you place blame on others. However with projection, you also are placing unwanted feelings onto others. A few examples of the feelings placed are often one of anxiety, guilt, shame, and other negative emotions.

Why do individuals use deflection?

It’s used to attack or blame another person rather than accepting criticism or blame for your own actions. When someone deflects, they are trying to feel less guilty, avoid negative consequences, and put the blame on others. The guilty person deflects their guilt onto the person who is accusing them or onto another person.

When someone deflects, they use it throw someone or something off course, often by using a distraction.
