By making the Louisiana purchase, Thomas Jefferson advanced another noble goal of "We the People" in establishing the Constitution to promote the general welfare. Today, when America is a global superpower straddling the North American continent from sea to shining sea, it is hard to remember that America was once merely a narrow strip of settlements stretching the Atlantic seaboard.
