In 2014, The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government introduced the 99th Constitutional Amendment. This replaced the Collegium system used to to appoint judges to the higher judiciary, with a National Judicial Appointments Commission.
However, in 2015 the Supreme Court struck this down as unconstitutional.
Since then, the BJP-led government has had a long standing battle with the judiciary on the Collegium system of appointments.
