Labeling an experience or a moment can help learners understand a situation or feeling, but what happens when we label learners as a whole. Terms like “low functioning” or “unmotivated” describe the learner as a whole and may inadvertently shift our expectations, which affects the opportunities afforded to them and impact their potential success. What terms do you use or hear others use that may be focusing on what learners can’t do (yet)? How can you shift your or other’s mindsets to truly presume potential for all learners?
