What do you do when religion, toxic theology, and spiritual beliefs cause more psychological and emotional harm than good? This was the case for my first guest that I interview on my podcast.
We dive deep into her story of how her family's religious doctrine created years of hardship and suffering, lack of support for her choice in sexuality, and eventual eating disorder.
Athena (pen name) spent over two hours with me sharing her story of trauma to triumph. It is a story of a young girl forced into conversion camp and ECT therapy to one where she is healing and taking care of her health and body.
*** Trigger Warning*** this episode contains talk of sexual abuse, religious trauma, masturbation, emotional abuse, drug use and eating disorders. If this is difficult for you to listen to, please listen with caution.
We also dive into some of the beliefs and practices of the LDS faith. Some of what you hear might be shocking, even to those of you who practice this religion. I do not have any intensions of disregarding, bashing, or speaking ill of the LDS faith. My ask is that you listen with curiosity and hold Athena's perspective as her truth and her experience.
I owe A LOT of credit to this guest as it was meeting her and hearing part of her story that I knew her story needed to be shared with a larger audience. And the idea of this podcast was birthed. I believe that through sharing our narratives, healing occurs. And it reminds those of you listening, if you are experiencing any of this same things, you are not alone.
I hope you enjoy this amazing story of resiliency Athena shares with you.
