Born in Purulia, Mr. Dasgupta started his career as a lecturer in economics. However, he switched to film making in the late 1960s. Right from his first feature film Dooratwa, Buddhadeb received critical acclaim for his films. He won 12 national awards and was twice nominated for the prestigious Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2007, he was given the Golden Athena Award at the Athens International Film Festival. A year later, he was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Spain International Film Festival in Madrid. These recognitions are mentioned only to give a glimpse of his talent.
