Jessye began her teaching in Muskogee. In 1926 she moved to Harlem to join the Dixie Jubilee Singers. The following year they performed in the film Uncle Tom's Cabin, and soon became the production's curator and guardian. Soon the group became the Eva Jessye Choir.
