CHIEF OF THE SEMINOLES

Brown Davis' Scottish doctor father was assigned to accompany the Seminoles on their Trail of Tears journey. In 1867, her parents died of cholera so she went to live with her brother John, who was Seminole chief. John resigned after 30years in 1916. Needing someone to manage tribal affairs, President Harding made the70-year-old Alice chief. When she was ordered to transfer Seminole lands to the Creeks, she refused. They tried to appoint two other chiefs and they also refused. She remained chief until her death in 1935.
