Content Warning: Discussion of colonization and war.
In this episode, I tell a short, fable-adjacent myth from Scotland. The myth is humorous and is related to a style of myth called a "Trickster Tale". The story was first recorded by George Douglas in 1901 and was often referred to as a nursery tale. Its unclear when the myth was actually created or where it originated from in Scotland. However, the use of Christian themes places it after the Roman invasion. We'll discuss Scottish history, the affect that the colonizing influences of Rome and England had on its inhabitants, and how the Scottish assimilated into the "United Kingdom".
We'll analyze how this story comments on Christianity, how the history of the Scots affects the myth, and more throughout the episode. Furthermore, we'll discover some of the dichotomies set-up by classism and how they are translated into mythic interpretations, often in the form of animals.
