Description

Richard Lapper's latest book "Beef, Bible and Bullets: Brazil in the Age of Bolsonaro" explains the rise of the maverick right-wing populist in Latin America's largest country. It describes how the country's worst ever recession, growing criminal violence and an unparalleled corruption scandal led to the unexpected victory of an extremist political outsider. It also explains how rapidly expanding evangelical churches, wealthy agribusiness groups and a powerful security establishment – the so-called bible, beef and bullets lobby – has brought to office the Brazil's most conservative government since the dictatorships of the1970s.  Richard Lapper joins FPA President Ian Williams to discuss the book and what's to come for Brazil, the continent’s superpower.
