Episode 6–474: Applying the 80/20 Principle to Communications
Let’s talk about 80/20
the 80/20 Principle, also known as the Pareto Principle, says that 80% of outcomes and activity are driven by 20 % of efforts or other happenings.
The 80/20 Principle can be applied to our communication in the areas of content creation and sharing, and also to our general interpersonal interactions.
First we can recognize that 80% of what we communicate is driven by 20% of other elements of learning and knowledge share. So, it is important to have clarity about what is driving the content of our communication and be very intentional regarding what we are intending to communicate.
Next, we can focus in on the how and how much we communicate. We may be in a position to answer questions or to be a part of a panel discussion. In such cases, we may be delivering 80% of the verbal communication. Or we may be the person who is receiving more content in order to apply it or mine the most important points, in which case we may be listening 80% of the time. The point is that we should be mindful that 20% of our communication is what will most influence what drives action to accomplish goals. Additionally, when we are mindful of the 80/20 rule as it applies to interpersonal communication it will help to ensure that we understand others' perspectives and contribute meaningfully to the discussion.
Keep the 80/20 Principle in mind when communicating.
