Character Matters, Part 4 - Vulnerability
Are you real and relatable - do you practice vulnerability as an important characteristic of connection? Having the strength to be vulnerable allows us to connect with others. Popular belief would have us believe that we should hide our insecurities, doubts, and disappointments. However, when we allow ourselves to get to a vulnerable level of sharing it can actually be a path to meaningful connection.
Think about the last time you experienced vulnerability - where you or others showed up open. What happened? My experience has been been that in safe and supportive circumstances, showing up open and demonstrating vulnerability, gives others permission to do the same. In fact, I find that many people really appreciate the opportunity to speak with others who truly demonstrate understanding - not for the sake of pity, but for the sake of connection. True shared experience and understanding. In some case where an experience is not mutual, the ability to share in a vulnerable confidence, provides support and actually helps to build relationship.
Practicing vulnerability and being trustworthy with vulnerability are important characteristics. Dealing in reality with one another allows us to provide true support and allow us to have focus, and understanding. Show up open and be willing to practice vulnerability in safe spaces.
