Episode 544: The Challenge of Taking Risks
Let’s talk about moving forward with the information at hand
Sometimes we tend to look at taking risks as win-lose situations,
instead of win-learn opportunities. Think if the various risks you have taken in your life, choosing between options, experiencing something new or different, or maybe committing to a new relationship or partnership. Some level of risk is a part of leading a growth oriented and relevant life.
When we take on a risk, we proceed down a path knowing that there is a desired outcome and a chance that where we might find ourselves is not what we imagined to be the ideal. In some
cases that may have some negative or more difficult aspects and in other cases our new predicament may be a welcome change that we had not considered.
But in all cases, taking a risk means there is some change. A change in our circumstances and/or a change in our experience that is part of what uniquely propels us into our future. Being “risk averse” can sometimes serve us well, if it means we are gathering information on which to take action, but we mustn’t be so averse to change that we fail to grow, cease to add positive
value, or become irrelevant. Taking risks helps to increase our experiential reference points and can help us to build confidence.
So next time you are face with the challenge of taking a risk
think about the win-learn scenario, determine if the opportunity is presenting a calculated risk, and if you have enough information and experience to proceed with commitment and confidence. And decide with intention if you can say to that
risk: “Challenge Accepted.”
