Episode 6-448: Predictability Preferred
Let’s Talk About Decreasing Uncertainty
Whether it's interpersonal interactions, investing money, taking a vacation, or planning for the future - people seem to prefer predictability. This isn't to discount the appreciation of things going better than anticipates, it is to say we do our best to chart a course and most proceed with caution when things are unknown in order to provide themselves the best possible option for a response. When things are unpredictable, the uncertainty can create strain. Strain can activate stress that is if not managed can create a bit of chaos. And while chaos can drive order, chaos can also result in a breakdown.
It's important to understand the value of predictability to help manage the present and to help us discover the future. Predictability allows us to plan. Predictability allows us to build upon our new discoveries in context of what is known. Predictability in relationships allows us to trust, to engage productively, to recognize when things are aligned and misaligned.
Though our world is constantly evolving, some level of predictability is important to support necessary change. When we interact with others we must understand the importance of mutually shared goals and expectations and the foundation of stability they
bring. Likewise we must understand how the unpredictability of surprise or managing the unknown may impact a situation or interactions with others. Experience managing change can help build our ability to more effectively deal with change.
We can employee processes that make our actions seem more predictable. However, managing unpredictable circumstances can take a mental toll on us in a work setting and personally. So, it is important to understand how we can give ourselves and those around us the gift of predictability so that we can best manage all the things life has in store for us. Predictability isn’t a bad thing and it is not in opposition to change. Rather predictability is the foundation of change.
