Let’s talk about influence and impact
To establish genuine relationships there must be understanding about what matters to the other person or group and what they value.
Getting to know a person or group allows you to understand what
you have in common, what you do not have in common, where there are needs to be met. In some cases relationships can be more one sided, where things are being shared with us to allow us to understand or connect of our own free will. Think of how a commercial might share information with us that attempts to provide some shared experience or identify some common need or want.
When it comes to individual and organizations there are some basic approaches to establishing knowledge and understanding that serves as a basis for building relationship. We can do research, we can ask questions, we can make visual observations of behaviors and physical objects to help us understand
more about people and organizations and what they value.
Getting to know people takes time and intention. As the saying goes, people will not care what you know, until they know that you care. Getting to know and understand others shows we have some interest, and possibly some care. Motives matter, so being
genuine in relationship matters. REAL relationships are influential and life changing.
When we can be real with one another it can have huge impact.
Take a bit of time to think about the influence and impact others
have had on you and the relationship you had with and the reality they shared with you. Then think about how you interact with others and where you have had the greatest positive impact. Was
there some common ground, was there some empathy and understanding, was there a need being fulfilled? Relationship is key to influence and impact.
