Episode 6 – 491: Relationships Continued
Let’s talk about influence and impact
Today I want to talk about the importance of engaging and checking in.
Misinterpretation of interactions can be a stumbling block to establishing good relationships. Because we all operate from our experiential frame of reference, it’s very important to keep in mind that how perceive and experience things may not be exactly the same as others.
While it is true that on the face of a situation it may appear that
there is good communication, in order to establish good communication it is
important to check in with others.
First we need to understand how they are experiencing the interaction to ensure we are communicating our content clearly and in a manner that it can be consumed and appreciated effectively.
We need to check in on expectations and understandings. One way to do this is to exercise F.I.N.E. Active Listening skills, where the acronym F.I.N.E. stands for Feelings, Interests, Needs, and Expectations.
When we take the time to ensure that there is good two way dialogue, it allows us to best build and/or manage our relationships. In group settings, this might look like checking in with the audience, utilizing polls, or taking questions. In a one-on-one setting it would be more of a direct conversation and observation of activities.
Remember that influence and impact come through relationship. So be intentional about checking in to ensure clear, accurate, complete, and effective dialogue.
