Episode 6 – 492: Relationships Differences

Let’s talk about overcoming differences

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things
just isn’t the same – and so it doesn’t belong – or does it? We naturally defer to patterns and notice differences, however differences of themselves don’t diminish value. Different from the majority or the status quo isn’t necessarily a thing to be avoided as much as it might be a thing to be understood.

Sometimes we allow our perception of differences or things that
are unfamiliar to us become barriers to understanding and building relationship
versus taking time to understand or even see the things that we do have in common.  I am reminded of two people that want the
same outcome, but have different perspectives and approaches as they lean on their own understanding and interpretations instead of attempting to look at things from varied perspectives. In this example their resistance to intentionally seeking to
understand an alternative perspective creates a barrier that prevents forward momentum.  Imagine if the two were to
seek out common ground or shared understanding and use that as a basis to move forward. Doing this would allow them to bypass what they currently view as a barrier to progress.

Our reality is that we are always learning and changing whether it
is done intentionally or not. So having a mindset for progress is important.
Even when we find common ground or understanding as a basis for a path forward, this does not mean that we will agree on everything, but it does allow  us to make as much progress as possible in a respectful manner. There may come a point when we decide the relationship may not be what we had hoped or what we might like, and that decision will be based on understanding instead of speculation that might be false.

So my encouragement today is for each one of us to be careful not to let our preconceptions and assumptions get in the way of understanding and our ability to form positively impactful relationships with others. Differences can be appreciated and bring strength in diversity. Let’s seek to understand one another and interact with respect.
