Let’s talk about the importance of what’s in the box

Knowing what’s in the box can help us.  When we know what is in the box, we understand the tools and resources that are available to us.  When we know what is in the box we better understand
how things may operate or function and how we can be most effective. So as individuals, it is important to take inventory of the tools and resources we have.  We can take inventory by
understanding how we are expected to contribute and what skills and abilities are needed. We can then assess if we have the resources and abilities to do what is expected of us either on our own or with available help.  If we find that we are at a deficit, we’ll
need to communicate in order to resolve the issue of the deficit. We can ask what resources are available to us and how they might assist us.  I once worked at an organization that had a
very talented marketing and communications department.  It seemed that the department was focused purely on client facing and business development work.  It turned out that they were also available for internal projects and this positively impacted our employee communications and expanded our internal communications to being something that could be used as examples to assist our clients, ultimately adding more value all around.

As leaders in an organization, it’s important to ensure people
have the tools to do their job. It is also important that managers help employees to understand how the organization functions. When employees are empowered by understanding how the organization functions and by building relationships throughout the organization, they can function with more of an owner’s mindset, looking out for the company and the client.

These ideas also translate into our personal lives.  When we know what tools we have available and we work on ensuring we have the tools we need to be good communicators, good supporters, and good mentors and role models that enable others to do the same, we all become better equipped to have fulfilling relationships.

The important thing to keep in mind is that knowing what resources are available and how they are structured, is foundational to growing and maturing within an organization or any structure of people. So, let’s keep up with what’s in our box.
