Episode 6 – 504: Wisdom Series-Avoid Regrets
Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 5 Avoid Regrets
In chapter 5 of Proverbs, Solomon provides advise regarding honoring and being true to relationships, and avoiding alluring deception that might result in regrets. It’s yet another reminder of how instruction, wisdom, and understanding can provide positive impact for our lives. A couple of verses that help identify the how regret can show up, verses 12 & 13.
Verses 12 & 13 of Proverbs Chapter 5 read as follows:
(12) And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof, (13) And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!”
These verse exemplify the exasperation of regret, when our choices lead to poor outcomes, or complicate the work that needs to get done to get us back in alignment with our goals and potential. Regret, is that self-disappointing feeling that comes when we know we had every opportunity to make better choices, but we failed to listen to instruction or our personal experience, which results in a more difficulty and complications. It can be easy to be deceived by options for actions or behaviors that in the moment seem easier or seem to offer some fast forward, but the reality is that deception is fleeting and can lead to more
difficulty.
It is best to make decisions and take actions that honor and align with our values and goals – when we do this, it will help us to avoid regret. And we can do this in every aspect of our lives, whether it be in a personal or professional setting. We typically don’t regret decisions that we have taken to consider.
When we make our best choice, even if things don’t turn out as planned, we avoid the regret of taking shortcuts and not applying our best selves. The good news is that we can learn from all our experiences and we always have a choice to make thoughtful decisions.
