Episode 6 – 507: Wisdom Series – Rich Living
Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 10: 4, 15, 17 – Living a Rich Life
Chapter 10 of Proverbs give us wisdom in the form of comparing
situations and circumstances. It provides us context to be discerning about what comes by utilizing wisdom and what happens when understanding is lacking. Today I’ve chosen three verses from the 10th chapter of Proverbs that embody
living a “rich” and fulfilling life.
Chapter 10, verse 4 reads– “(4) He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.”
This verse speaks to the importance of having an attitude to work and taking action to work in a diligent manner, and the benefits that come from that diligence. It reminds us that our choices and behaviors have corresponding results and that we have responsibility for our choices.
Chapter 10, verse 15 reads– “(15) The rich man’s wealth is
his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty.”
I think this verse can be interpreted in different ways, however
it speaks to me about monetary wealth being a means for other things that benefit life. Wealth in and of itself is not enough, it is what wealth can accomplish, in this case a strong city that allows for prosperity of living that is the benefits. In contrast, we see that when people are in poverty there is lack that can become harmful. This is not to say that there is shame in poverty, but it is to acknowledge the difficulty of that circumstance in taking care of wants and needs that might be satisfied with monetary wealth.
Chapter 10, verse 17 reads– “(17) He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses correction goes astray.”
This verse speaks to the importance continuing to learn and to
employ learning as a way to live life more fully. The contrast of refusing to learn is identified as a problem that causes one to remain in a condition that is lacking the fullness that might otherwise be possible.
All of these verses speak to what seems to really matter for
engagement in life. Hard work gives us purpose, and allows us a means to do other things that can provide more prosperity for ourselves and others. The verses also reinforce the lifelong learning nature of living and that having these perspectives along with consistent actions can help us lead more fulfilling lives. As we seek to help people remain engaged in work and in life, and perhaps first look at ourselves in these areas, take notice of the dichotomy of choices we have in living. And take note of how our choices impact our long term circumstances, this will help us to lead the lives rich in quality that we purpose and desire.
