Episode 6 – 508: Wisdom Series – Counsel & Mercy
Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 11: 14, 17
Chapter 11 of Proverbs gives us wisdom in the form of contrasting
“if this than that” statements. Today I have selected two verses, one dealing with good counsel and one dealing with the benefits of mercy. Let’s look at verses 14 and 17 of the 11 chapter of
Proverbs.
Chapter 11, verse 14 reads – “(14) Where there is no counsel,
the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there’s safety .”
This verse speaks to the importance of having counselors for
life and work. When we have important decisions to make or things to do, being able to consult with others can add good perspective and make for a better decision. The people that we interact with as advisors can help to bring a greater collective wisdom for our benefit and advantage.
Chapter 11, verse 17 reads– “(17) The merciful man does good
for his own soul, But he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.”
This verse speaks to me about the benefit of exercising mercy.
Mercy is kind, and engaging. It benefits the recipient, but this verse stresses the extension of mercy as a benefit for the ones who extend it. Extending mercy is good for our souls. This is contrasted with the second part of the verse that reminds us that being cruel is detrimental to the one who exercises cruelty. So, this reminds me of the importance to be supportive of other success.
