Episode 6 – 509: Wisdom Series – Knowledge & Speaking

Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 12: 1, 17 - 19

Chapter 12 of Proverbs  continues to give us wisdom in the form of contrasting statements and continues to show us outcomes that can be observed with regard to choices that have been made and behaviors that are part of one’s character.
Today I have selected one standalone verse, and a passage of three consecutive verses to share with you that have a subject matter of knowledge and the outflow of speaking. Let’s look at verses 1 and 17 through 19 of the 12th chapter of Proverbs.

Chapter 12, verse 1 reads– “(1) Whoso loveth instruction loveth
knowledge, but he that hateth reproof is brutish.”

The chapter starts out identifying that obtaining instruction, which can include correction, is the way to obtaining knowledge.  It is contrasted by comparing those who dislike receiving correction to something that is wild, and unable to appreciate the
very thing that would be helpful.  So, we are remined that we should appreciate teaching and correction as part of the
path to gain beneficial knowledge.

Chapter 12, verses 17 - 19 reads– “(17) He that speaketh
sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. (18) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is health. (19) The lip of truth shall be established for ever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.”

These verses highlight the importance speech and what speaking can reveal. Speaking can reveal our credibility, speaking can be cutting and harmful or it can be something that builds up and supports.  And speaking the truth is enduring, where are lies will create difficulty in the long run and those that lie reveal their poor character and ulterior motive. Sometimes we can discount things that are said, but these verses remind us of the importance of he words that are said relative to our character or the character of the one who has spoken.

As people who lead and who others may follow, it is important that we are seekers of knowledge so that we can both benefit from that knowledge and share it with others. And finally, being impeccable with our words should be our benchmark and something we encourage in others as an important aspect of personal and professional development.
