Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 17: 22 and Chapter 17:27-28 - Cheerful & Restrained
Chapter 17 verse 22 reads – “(22) A cheerful heart is good
medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
This verse really speaks to the importance of our disposition and the impact it can have on us. A cheerful heart is likened to medicine. Medicines helps move toward a more desirable and preferred state. This is contrasted by a crushed spirit that can steal our focus and perspective. When we understand these principles, it allows us to be more mindful and thoughtful in our relationships.
Chapter 17, verses 27 – 28 read– “(27) A man of knowledge uses
words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. (28) Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.”
These verses highlight the importance of intention and
self-control. The verses also help us to understand the importance of listening and observing to gain the clarity needed for positive momentum and to do the work of moving through and past circumstances. Finally, we are reminded that both the wise and the foolish can come across as discerning by the use of restraint. So, there is implication of our need to be discerning versus assumptive. To understand what is behind the silence, we must be diligent in our observations.
So, let’s be encouraged this week to be mindful of our words
and of the words and behavior of others. We may be able to lend a helping hand, and we may be to able to intentionally be a positive voice of encouragement and counsel to others.
