Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 22 & 23. Wisdom Series – Prudence & Education

Today our inspiration comes for the book of Provers Chapters
22 & 23.  We’ll be looking at Prudence in Chapter 22, verses 1 & 3, and then Education in Chapter 23, verses 12 & 23. Both of these chapters are very rich in providing insights for living, so I encourage you to take some time to read and meditate on the
chapters, as you are able to make the time.
One thing, I sometimes do is listen to the chapters using an audible version of the bible on the Audible app. Technology is definitely a wonderful thing in regard to essentially allowing us to have access to a library of information in our handheld devices.  Let’s go ahead and dive in.

Chapter 22, verses 1 & 3 –  (1) “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” And (3) “A prudent man forseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on and are punished.”

These verses both speak to exercising prudence. It’s easy to
be distracted by the “shiny, new” things in life,  However, it is prudent to seek after the things that are enduring and that cannot easily be stripped away. Being a person of good reputation will bring favor that money cannot. We seek counsel from those who make wise choices and those who are discerning. We also see in verse 3 that a prudent person is observant and keeps themselves from situations that might cause avoidable harm.  So, here we are reminded to exercise observation and good critical decision making skills, both part of being a prudent person that seeks to live a life with positive
forward momentum.

Chapter 23, Verses 12 & 23 –   (12) “Apply thine heart unto instruction, and then ears to the words of knowledge.” And (23) “Buy truth, and sell it not, also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.”

Both of these verses speak to the importance of learning and
the application of that learning. When we seek things with our heart, we are earnest, committed to that course of action. We are urged here to be committed to the pursuit of learning. In verse 23, we see that making sacrifice to gain truth and wisdom, instruction, and understanding is a prudent thing.  Once we gain truth, we need to hold onto it.  This does not imply that we should not share it, what not selling it means is that truth is not something to be discarded or disregarded. So, we see it is important to continue on a path of learning and that obtaining knowledge and understanding will be beneficial for us and those around us.

So be encouraged this week to prioritize things that are
enduring and to be intentional about your continued learning, understanding, and application of knowledge.
