Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 27:6 & 17 & Chapter 28:21. Wisdom Series – Friendship & Respect
Today our inspiration comes for the book of Proverbs Chapters
27 & 28. We’ll be speaking about the value of friendship and some thoughts around respecting people and positions.
Chapter 27, verse 6 & 17 reads: (6) “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” And (17) Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
These verses provide insights on the value of good friends and close relationships. Sometimes we need to hear uncomfortable things to help us grow, and it helps when we can trust the source is one who wants us to succeed. Also, we see that who we are
surrounded by makes a difference, as we can build one another up. This is part of the reasoning behind coaches and mentors, they can help us to grow through their experience and also through shared interaction and experience.
Chapter 28, verse 21 reads: (21) “To have respect of persons
is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.”
This verse provides a bit of a warning about preferential treatment of individuals. And it reminds us that people are fallible and can be tempted to make poor choices. This does not mean that we should not respect the position that someone is on and the authority that position may have. However, it does refer to our regard for individuals.
This might look like treating people differently based on their socio-economic status, their family lineage, their race, or maybe their age. Our treatment of people is best based on our ability to do right by them in reference to the circumstances at hand and any applicable patterns of character and behavior.
So, take some time to think about the people that surround
you and how you might support and encourage them and if they do the same for you. Also, take some time to think about how you interact with others. Do you find yourself providing preferential treatment, where it might not be warranted.
