Let’s talk about Proverbs, Chapter 29 & 30. Wisdom Series – Speech and Actions
Proverbs Chapter 29:5 & 11 & Chapter 30:32- 33
Today our inspiration comes for the book of Proverbs Chapters
29 & 30. We’ll be speaking about how words can be used, and not used, and the impact our words and behavior can have. We’re looking at two verses in each of the chapters.
Chapter 29, verse 5 reads: (5) “A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.” And (11) “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.”
These verses provide some insight about how words are used. Flattery can be used in an underhanded manner to set others up for a fall. So we are warned about flattery and to be wary of it. Not everyone is providing a well intended compliment, sometimes there is a motive to try to get you to lack off on your attentiveness or critical thinking application. Be wary of words that encourage you to slack, versus bolstering you to perform at a higher level. The second verse reminds us that silence can be prudent. Just because we have information, knowledge, or an opinion, we should be mindful about our timing in sharing things. Sometimes by waiting to speak, we are able to learn and discern more to that when we share it is of greater value.
Chapter 30, verses 32 -33 reads: (32) “If thou hast done
foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.” And (33) “Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.”
These verses provide advice around correcting our behavior,
while still noting the natural outcome of actions. When we have done something regrettable, we should recognize it and stop the behavior. In this case, we see the example of boasting being something to take proactive action to prevent and avoid. And the latter verse reminds us that there are outcome to our behaviors. When we do good work, such as churning for milk, we receive the butter or the benefit of our good labor. Likewise, when we
exercise poor or harsh behavior, it will yield trouble. So when we experience strife and difficulty, it’s important to understand what role we may have had, if any, in arriving at our current circumstance. If we desire change, then controlling our speech and behavior can help move us into that direction.
So, be encouraged that we each have the freedom of choice
and the ability to be discerning about how speech is being used, how we use our speech, and how we choose to interact and behave.
