Episode 6–524: The Looking Glass
Let’s talk about seeing the positive others see in you and
helping others to do the same.
What do you see when you look in a mirror and you see a familiar face staring back at you? The longer we live, the more our experience influences what we see. But still we can have blind
spots. And so, I thought I would share a little about the gifts I’ve received that help reduce the size of our blind spots.
One of the best gifts I have been given over the years is for others to share what they saw in me. Fortunately, most of the time it was positive. This was such a valuable gift on multiple occasions because what others found to be value, I had not
thought of it in that way. On other occasions, they saw things in me that I hadn’t considered to be of benefit. This allowed me to value and intentionally utilize those gifts. It brought a sense of confidence and willingness to engage in new opportunities at a higher level.
As leaders, mentors, colleagues, friends, and parents, we have relational obligation to help bring out the best in others. We are able to see things based on our experience that others may not see. And when we share our observations, we can help people to find their way. We also let them know that we see them and
that they matter. Helping people to identify their professional and technical strength might just be the confidence builder they need to get to breakthrough or the next level.
So remember that what you see in others may be hidden to them and vice-versa. And some of our talents may be hidden to us, just waiting to be discovered.
