Episode 6-574: Challenge Accepted – Recognizing Needs Vary
Let’s talk about recognizing boundaries vary
About a decade ago my son went weightlifting with some new friends. The friends were used to lifting a lot of weight but my son was not.
They took turns lifting the weights and when my son was struggling, they would help him lift the weight. Little did they know, that they were not helping my son to build muscle, but they were actually creating muscle damage. So much so that a few days later my son wound up being hospitalized in critical care. His muscles had begun to break down and enter his body fluids and it took days to flush his system to help prevent the situation from becoming fatal.
This situation is an example of needs that varied. My son was not able to withstand the same training as the others who had more experience. They were at different levels of development and that caused for a variance in boundaries and approach to provide benefit and avoid injury.
Another example is that we would likely not use the same approach or content when teaching a high school student math, as we would with a first grade student. Their levels of development call for different approaches and information.
This same principle applies when people go through the process of maturity and development. The bumpers
required for development and training can be removed over time. The boundaries needed for further development change over time. Keeping bumpers will stunt true development. Recognizing boundaries that may be modified to support future growth is important. What one person needs at a point in their development to grow and keep them on track, may be different than what another needs that is in a different stage of their development.
So, let’s accept the challenge of keeping in mind that when it comes to development, varied stages of development call for varied levels of support. And keeping a constraint in place that is no longer needed, may stunt
development instead of supporting the progression of growth. We can share what works for us and the boundaries we use, but what works for others and the
boundaries they maintain may vary.
