Dream of a heartbeat
Sticky clothes from sweating fast in the midday heat
Quick trip outside, this is not a day to drag your feet
Clean the kitchen, do the wash, be sure and hang your clothes
Try to pick the place up and put everything where it goes
And I look to the skies and watch the sun move slowly west
As I dream of a heartbeat that I want close to my chest
Is today the day that her calendar will finally turn?
I want to know so much but she’s careful not to burn
Fire took her past and scorched a happy home
Ever since, her broken heart aimlessly seems to roam
Searching for a port like a ship lost in the storm
Looking for safety, comfort and a place to stay warm
But until that last fire is out, moved to a forgotten page
That memory will burn with a cruel careless rage
So I keep lookin to the western sky with a gleam in my eye
You may stumble and fall, but just keep on giving it a try
Time for a shower, get out of this damn old sticky shirt
Wash away the tears and try your best not to hurt
I’ll keep looking to the skies and watch the sun move slowly west
And dream of a heartbeat that I want close to my chest
