Upstate in Dannemora, an off-duty New York state trooper was killed Sunday in a snowmobile crash. Joshua Gushlaw lost control of the snowmobile, getting from the trail and hitting several trees, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Overseas, Russia says that its recognition of independence for areas in eastern Ukraine extends to territory currently held by Ukrainian forces.
