From New York, the greatest city in the world, it's The Update with Brandon Julien! Today's road stop is on the Samuel L. Newhouse of the Staten Island Ferry.
Some stories talked about on today's show were:
1. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling for a national enlistment program for doctors and nurses to handle an expected surge in coronavirus cases in New York and other places around the country. De Blasio told MSNBC that the military should organize a program to move medical personnel where they are needed. He said on CNN that the country is fighting "an invisible enemy" and should be on a wartime footing.
2. Many funeral homes in New York and around the globe are in crisis as they try to meet surging demand amid the coronavirus pandemic. Funeral directors are being squeezed on one side by inundated hospitals trying to offload bodies, and on the other by the fact that cemeteries and crematoriums are booked for a week at least.
3. The Tribeca Film Festival, postponed by the pandemic, is moving some elements of its annual New York event online. Tribeca organizers say Friday that much of the planned programming will be available to the public or entertainment industry over roughly the same days that the festival would have taken place this month. That restores, at least in part, a showcase that filmmakers and artists that were relying on.
