We're joined in this episode by Brent McKim, the President of the both the Jefferson County (KY) Teachers Association and the National Council of Urban Education Associations. A native of southern Indiana and a current Louisville, KY, resident, Kentucky Derby Week seemed an excellent time to catch up with Brent. Along the way we discuss Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown-winning performance, the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Bengals, a less-than-ideal first NFL game experience at Indianapolis' then-Hoosier Dome, John Mellencamp's grandmother's yodeling skills, the "intense relationship" between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, Louisville native son Muhammad Ali, the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, and, of course, the Kentucky Derby and all the festivities that come with the weeklong celebration.
And, just because we're speaking with someone in Kentucky, we also talk Bourbon for a hot second or three. Brent's recommendations: Four Roses Small Batch and Willett Pot Still Reserve.
If, like me, you can't think about the Kentucky Derby without hearing Dan Fogelberg's "Run for the Roses" play in your mind, here's a link to a live perfomance of the song.
