We're joined in this episode by Brooklyn, NY, resident, former Village Voice News Editor, and 2-time published author, Neil deMause.
During our Conversation with Neil we focus heavily on his first book which he co-authored with Joanna Cagan. It's entitled Field of Schemes: How the Great Stadium Swindle Turns Public Money into Private Profit. As the title suggests, deMause and Cagan take a deep dive examining the uniquely American tradition of public funds helping underwrite billionaire owners' desires to build new stadiums and arenas (primarily to their benefit).
In addition to co-authoring the book, Neil maintains the website FieldofSchemes.com where you'll find regular updates on this ongoing practice. You're also able to follow his work on X (formerly Twitter) @FieldofSchemes and on BlueSky @fieldofschemes.bsky.social.
And, fear not, we don't wallow in the mire of stadium economics the entirety of our time with Neil, we also discuss his fondness for the New York Mets and Barcelona FC.
Neil's most recent book is The Brooklyn Wars: The Stories Behind the Remaking of New York's Most Celebrated Borough.
