Psalm 1 – The Walk of the Righteous and the Wicked – Consider Your Walk
Pause and Know
Pause and consider the walk of the righteous.
Psalm 1:1 – Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
Who should we listen to? The world is full of people giving advice.
The lifestyles of the ungodly are destroying our culture and influencing our families.
A scoffer mocks faith and laughs at Christians.
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.
Our Counsel Should Come from God. Psalm 73:24 – You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.
“he meditates day and night” – How often do you meditate on God’s Word?
Day and night? Daily? Weekly-just on Sundays? Monthly?
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
A tree is an image of stability and being able to withstand the storms of life.
It has a dependable source of nourishment – God’s Word.
It’s a picture of spiritual and mental stability in every situation.
It continues to grow in strength and its ability to bear fruit, It doesn’t wither with age.
Some Christians are like a stump, they don’t grow or mature. The Righteous grow in maturity.
You can be young only once, but you can be immature for a long time.
The Righteous have joyous stability and a life overflowing with the blessings of God. They prosper.
A life that prospers, a true life, is one that finds its delight in what God says.
It is a life that is directed, guided, and influenced by the Scriptures.
Success in the Christian life is measured by faith not finance.
A blessed man is rooted, fruitful, alive, and prosperous.
Pause and Know
Pause and consider the walk of the lost.
4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
The Bible tells us the wicked or lost “are not so“. This is a strong contrast to the walk of the righteous. Instead of being firmly planted, they are like “the chaff which the wind drives away“.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
It is through Jesus Christ and Him alone that one will find life and it is apart from Christ that one will perish.
Psalms 1 is an outline of humanity. There are only two kinds of people in this world. They are the Righteous and the lost. The Saints and the ain’ts. We are all either one of these. There is no in-between, no grey areas. They are walking in opposite directions. One walk leads to life, the other walk leads to destruction.
Which way are you walking?
