Hello WVJH!  I’m ________ and here’s the news you need to know today!

Our top story today is:  Stay at home order issued for Yakima County to stay in effect indefinitely.

The Yakima Health District said yesterday that the stay at home order will be in effect for an indefinite amount of time.  You may be wondering, “do I need to stay at home, in my house, with the doors shut and the curtains drawn?”  Not necessarily.  You should definitely go outside and play...go for walks...get exercise...ride your bike...walk your dog.  State health officials say these activities are fine and even recommend doing them, just make sure you are not meeting up with friends, groups of people, or congregating where you can’t practice safe social distancing.  You should only participate in these outdoor activities with the people who live in your home.  You may be thinking, “really, who’s going to enforce this?” or “can the Yakima County Health district prevent me from hanging out with my friends?”  The health officer has the authority to partner with local law enforcement and implement municipal fines at the health officer’s discretion. Non-compliance of these rules can be reported by calling 509-249-6508.  Do your part...stay home and follow the rules!  Please stay safe out there and help out our community by following the proper social distancing procedures.

Breakfast and lunch distribution sites to be downsized:    In conjunction with the governor’s Stay at Home order, the WV Child Nutrition department is scaling down meal service to one location. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the Junior High from 10:30 to noon, drive-thru style, and walk-ups. This will help reduce the exposure of staff and others to ensure we are serving children as safe as possible. We will continue daily meals at the Junior High location until Thursday, March 26 from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM.

Friday (3/27) we will provide children with 5-days of meals, both breakfast, and lunch.

This will cover Friday (3/27), Monday (3/30), Tuesday (3/31), Wednesday (4/1), and Thursday (4/2).  Children can pick up all 5 days of meals at the JH parking lot from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Friday, March 27.  Just a reminder that children must be present to receive meals.

The adjustments to meal service have been made in order to reduce in-person contact and travel burdens to families.  Additional updates will be communicated through SKYWARD. Thank you for your continued patience as we work through obstacles as they arise.

At-home spirit Week:  The West Valley School District is having an at-home spirit week and today is Waffle Day!  Post pictures of yourself or other family members eating waffles, cooking waffles, wearing waffles, you can even post your favorite waffle recipe to WVJH social media using the hashtag #WVathomespirit.  The spirit days for the rest of the week are:

The WV District Activity Coordinators have been working to plan activities to keep students involved during the school closure.  Next week, there’s going to be a scavenger hunt...stay tuned.

Be sure to check in with your teachers: All students should be checking their Google classrooms and school email every day.  Please make sure you are staying connected and doing school work.
