Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 17. I will then key in on verse 17: A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. There is no greater example of true friendship than the relationship David (the future king of Israel) had with Jonathon (the son of the current king of Israel) - King Saul. We will pick up in 1 Samuel Chapter 20. At this point, David has already killed Goliath (Chapter 17) and drawn the ire of Saul (Chapter 18 - as David has already defeated several enemies in battle on behalf of King Saul of Israel. I will begin reading in Chapter 20 and paraphrase that Jonathan finds out that Saul is definitely looking to kill David. I will read (and key in on ) verses 13-16. This is where Jonathan and David make a covenant with each other. Even though Jonathan should rightfully be the next king and succeed his father to the throne, Jonathan senses that the Lord is with David and that David will eventually succeed his father as king. He wants David's assurance that, when that happens, David will look out, not only for Jonathan, but Jonathan's descendants after him. I will then go back to verse 17 and demonstrate that the love that Jonathan and David showed to each other that that is what true friendship is.
