Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will be going over Proverb 18. I will key in on verse 15: The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. I looked up the word prudent and found out its meaning: having or showing good judgement and restraint, especially in conduct or speech. I then looked up synonyms for prudent: cautious, judicious, intelligent, discrete, sensible, circumspect, sane - and found out that being prudent is a good thing. I then mention Herod - king during the time of John the Baptist and Jesus. I go to Mark's account of the story where John the Baptist is beheaded - Mark, Chapter 6: verses 14-29. After reading these verses in their entirety I will come up with three thoughts to consider: 1. If you are prudent, you will be noticed (in verses 19-20 it tells us that Herod recognized that John was a holy man, and he was eager to hear what he had to say); 2. Have a heart to be prudent - if we truly have a desire to become more and more like Jesus, we will have to purpose in our hearts to seek Him (and to do that we have to develop a desire to open up the Scripture for ourselves); 3. Watch the words that come out of your mouth (Proverb 18:21 & Mathew 5:37) -Our words have power and we should exercise restraint in the words that we speak. We should be cautious in committing ourselves to something that we are not absolutely sure we can perform.
