Welcome to Wisdom Today with Bill Kelley. Today we will go over Proverb 17. I will then review the two verses we discussed on Monday's podcast (August 15th): Proverb 15: verses 1 and 18. Then I will bring up verse 13 of Proverb 17. I will tie these three verses into the story that we shared on Monday's podcast from 1 Samuel Chapter 25. I will review the backdrop of the story prior to rereading Chapter 25: verses 4-13. This is such a powerful story and there are three takeaways we can glean from this story: 1. David's men had protected Nabal's men (Nabal was from Carmel and was very rich. Carmel was located near the wilderness, and as such was a haven of thieves and murderers. David's men had protected Nabal's men from these men and situations. Because of this, David thought that his men could - and should be compensated for this.); 2. Nabal's name means "fool" and Nabal was also "full of himself." - as Proverbs often mentions the fact that we are to let other people praise us, and we are not to promote ourself, Nabal does just the opposite of this. He indeed acts like a fool and promotes himself to the extent that he asks - "Who is David, and who is the son on Jesse - knowing full well that he was a leader of the army of Saul and goes to ridicule him to the extent that he puts him in the category of a common servant who has "run away" from his master; and 3. Abigail "made things right." When she hears of what her husband has done, she realizes that, not only is her husband's life in danger, but her life is also in danger. She brings plenty of provisions and goes to see David and his men. She also prostrates herself on the ground and begs David to hear her out. As the story concludes, her husband Nabal dies and she becomes David's wife.
