Hollywood's bad, m'kay? That is lesson learned number one from watching David Cronenberg's excoriation of Hollywood's (lack of) culture in "Maps to the Stars". Julianne Moore drew a lot of attention to the film for her viciously satirical portrait of an aging actress no longer in high demand. She is backed up by the formidable cast, which includes Mia Wasikowska and John Cusack. This a puzzling, yet fascinating film. Cronenberg used to be known as the Baron of Blood, and there is some blood in this film, but one wonders: did he just want to skewer the vapidity and self-indulgence of the L.A. filmmaking hub? Or is there more to this film? Phil liked it more than Andrew, but both grapple with what is the larger meaning of the film.
